Minister of Health Mr. Ahmed Naseem during Wednesday's session of the Maldives parliament said that at least five doctors who were dispatched to Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo have absconded.

The minister made the statement in response to a query posed by North-Thinadhoo constituency lawmaker Mr. Abdul Mughnee.

The lawmaker had inquired about the possibilities of improving the hospital's management, and further directed his queries to possible reasons for multiple doctors absconding from the institution.

In response, the Minister of Health had stated that the reasons for absconding doctors remain unclear.

Meanwhile, the minister further claimed that the Ministry of Health was communicating with all relevant bodies of Thinadhoo to implement a stronger system to ensure doctors do not flee from their designated medical institutions.

Furthermore, Mr. Naseem added that doctors who are found fleeing after they have been assigned duties will be apprehended at airport venues as well.

"We have ensured that doctors can no longer flee without authorities' knowledge. They will be restricted from traveling without proper permits," minister Naseem commented.

Employing foreign doctors through state expenditure at various public health institutions costs several thousands of money in overheads each year.
