Videos showing a shark attacking divers attempting to free it from entanglement in a rope have rapidly circulated on social media.

The unsettling incident occurred on Friday at the Shark Tank Dive Site near Hulhumalé 'Neru' (entry channel from reef), with footage showing approximately ten individuals diving in the area at the time.

A person who shared the video on X stated that the entangled rope was originally part of the chum bucket used to feed the shark.

Feeding sharks is a common practice for divers in the area.

In the viral videos, the divers can be observed working to disentangle the shark from the rope, after which the shark swiftly leaped and attacked them. Four divers were targeted by the shark during the incident.

Information regarding their injuries is unknown as of yet.

Feeding sharks is explicitly prohibited by regulations governing recreational diving.

Despite the regulations the practice has become increasingly prevalent in various regions of the country, with individuals often feeding sharks at diving locations.

Unfortunate incidents have occurred in the past in attempts to feed sharks.

Sharks rank among the most formidable creatures in the ocean. Worldwide, there have been several incidents resulting in fatalities or severe injuries due to shark attacks.
