The Fuvahmulah City Council has decided to postpone the implementation of regulations that mandate imposing fees at diving points near Fuvahmulah City.
Prior to this decision, the regulation was to be put into force on August 1.
In an emergency meeting held on August 1, the Fuvahmulah City Council unanimously decided to postpone the implementation of the "Regulations for the Management of Marine Areas within Fuvahmulah Jurisdiction for Tourism Purposes."
No further information was disclosed by the council.
The decision to postpone the implementation of the rule came after the Fuvahmulah Diving Association and the diving schools in the island organized a protest by storming the council office last week.
Vice President of Fuvahmulah Diving Association, Abdulla Zafar Ali, expressed the divers' primary concern that the city council had formulated the rule without consulting them or the general public. He also said that the fees set under the rules were deemed unreasonable.
There are approximately 10 diving schools currently operating in Fuvahmulah City. Additionally, a number of safaris regularly dock near Fuvahmulah waters for diving purposes.
