National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has decided to distribute MVR 4 million to 90 local residences in exchange for the damage incurred as a result of the recent relentless downpours in Maldives.
According to NDA, 9 local islands reported damages due to the rainfall. These islands are Baa Atoll Goidhoo, Laamu Atoll Gan and Maamendhoo, Lhaviyani Atoll Hinnavaru, Seenu Atoll Feydhoo, Gnaviyani Atoll Fuvahmulah, and Kaafu Atoll Guraidhoo and Himmafushi.
Of these 9 islands, total 103 homes faced damages. The Authority states that assessments were carried out in these residences and financial aid was resolved to be provided to 90 of these homes.
These 90 residences faced damage to their household essentials. Twenty one of these homes suffered various levels of destruction to its structure to which compensation is set to be provided.
These houses are being distributed a total of MVR 474, 349 as financial compensation.
NDA also stated that the destruction and damage caused by the heavy downpour and flash flood last Friday in Male’ has caused damages costing over MVR 1 million to households in the city.
Under the disaster humanitarian aid policy, financial assistance of MVR 711, 541 has also been determined to be distributed to assessed residences in the capital, as per the NDA.
The highest expense from this amount was to compensate for structural damages which adds up to MVR 611, 466. Damages to everyday household essentials measure up to approximately MVR 100,000.
