National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced that MVR 1.3 million was acquired as aid for the families who suffered in the heavy flooding of Male City, in December.

In a press conference held on Tuesday, Director General of NDMA Sofeenaz Hassan revealed that aid money was delivered to 126 homes after conducting necessary assessments.

Sofeenaz disclosed that financial aid and other means of assistance were provided by various businessmen and companies.

NDMA's policies dictate that only 20 percent of the losses are to be compensated, however, due to the amount received by the Authority, The Director General stated that 94 percent of the losses incurred by the families were covered through public donations.

Sofeenaz explained that it was not possible to cover 100 percent of the losses due to lack of equal funding for all households.

Furthermore, she mentioned that a leftover sum of MVR 12,000 from the aid had already been transferred to the Disaster Management Fund.

Sofeenaz emphasized the importance of disaster management, instructing citizens, government bodies and organizations to reduce damages in case of a disaster. She noted that prevention is the best policy, stating that NDMA aims to work similarly to reduce damages and prevent disasters in the future.
