President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday created the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The authority was formed under the Disaster Management Act implemented in 2015.
Ratified on September 6, 2015, the Act state that the NDMA must be created within 30 days of the Act coming into effect. However, the then government had failed to form the authority despite the law.
With this development, the workforce and mandate of the National Disaster Management Centre have been transferred to the NDMA.
According to the Act, the president will appoint the Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive of NDMA, while the authority will be overseen by a minister appointed by the incumbent.
