Youths play an instrumental role in shaping up the prospects of every single industry; and when it comes to travel, younger consumers have a bigger role to sway trends or even – form them. Looking at the experiences that the younger consumers are opting for, it would draw out an accurate illustration on what their plans would be when it comes to choosing travel destinations.

The travel industry is constantly transforming based on technological advancements and new service innovations. Moreover, global circumstances also shape up consumer expectations which were explicitly vivid in 2020 and even in 2021 – where travelers strongly leaned towards destinations that were guaranteed safe havens from Covid-19 infections. But what are the plans for the following year looking like while the current year is just around the corner of wrapping up?

Experiences Matter

Younger travelers are more prone towards creating new memories and experiencing things that have not been attempted in their lives before. Add that with the growing fascination among youths towards cuisine culture and you get the next possible youth travel trend – culinary choices.

In fact, many of the younger consumers have indicated that they wish to visit foreign locations to experience food and drinks native to the destinations they are visiting.

Maldives is not an unfamiliar name when it comes to offering authentic culinary experiences and trend analysts hint on younger consumers strongly choosing the island nation in the years to come for their experiences.

Social Media Influencers

Millennials and Gen Z are more well-versed in the modern technological innovations such as social media platforms as well as following up on ‘social influencer’ cultures. They are readily updated on the latest getaways of their favorite celebrities; who themselves are frequently visiting exotic foreign locations.

In addition to this, young consumers also acquire information and opinion from their friends and family based on the places they have visited – often through picture-oriented social media platforms such as Instagram.

Shifts in Popular Destinations

Interestingly, youths are comparatively looking to visit more far-flung regions in large numbers. Many of the top picks for youths when considering their travel itineraries include countries in the European peninsula.

However, in recent years countries such as Australia, Thailand and even more recently South Asian destinations such as the Maldives, Sri Lanka among others have been added into the favorable ‘top-of-the-mind’ destinations for younger travelers. The Rise of the Digital Nomads

The concept of digital nomads has been discussed previously; people looking to work at large corporations on a remote basis are increasing at a staggering capacity. Coincidentally or not, the major demographic of the digital nomads are youths between the ages of 25 to 38.

Many of these individuals are actively seeking out destinations from across the globe where remote working is encouraged and even endorsed. Countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines are immensely popular destinations for digital nomads while Maldives is a recent contender in the category that is gaining momentum.
