Dhunya Maumoon, the daughter of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, declared that her whole family was shocked by the jail sentence imposed by the Criminal Court on her father Wednesday.

The court convicted Maumoon, along with the Supreme Court's Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed, of obstructing justice after finding them guilty of deliberately refusing to comply with the police's order to hand over their mobile phones for investigation, after their arrests on February 5.

In the wake of the verdict, the former foreign minister said that she, her sister Yumna Maumoon, and their mother and former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim, were deeply shocked and saddened by the turn of events.

"We once again call upon the authorities to bring him home, given his ill health & age, on humanitarian grounds!" she said in a tweet, with an old photograph of the former presidential couple attached.

In addition to the jail sentence, the court has also annulled Maumoon, Saeed and Hameed's licenses to practise law and give religious sermons.

While Maumoon has been incarcerated for over 120 days during his trials so far, his family has repeatedly raised concerns over his poor health and appealed the authorities to shift him to house arrest.
