Maldives authorities have relaxed the visitation policy for inmates. With the relaxation, extended family members who were previously not granted visitation rights can now visit incarcerated family members.
The new policy applies to inmates held in the custody of the Maldives Police Service. Inmates held in remand jails fall under the jurisdiction of Maldives Corrections Service, under a separate regulation.
Under the previous regulation, family members who could visit inmates were restricted only to spouses, children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents, stepparents, siblings, and legal guardians.
Following the amendment, extended family, including uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and half-siblings, can also visit individuals held in custody. The new amendment grants visitation rights to step-grandparents as well.
The leniency also extends to the funeral rights provided for inmates. The new regulation allows inmates to attend the funerals of family members and the aforementioned relatives.
