First Lady Sajidha Mohamed stated today that while the Maldives tourism industry is progressing as it celebrates its successful 50 years, there are still significant challenges for women in the sector. She emphasized the need to change societal perceptions towards women working in resorts.

Speaking to encourage women's advancement in the tourism sector, the First Lady made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the "Maldives Travel Conference - Women's Edition 2024" held at Hotel Jen today.

First Lady Sajidha said that it is necessary to consider and find solutions to the problems and challenges faced by women in tourism sector jobs. She stated that the biggest concern and obstacle to progress remains the society's perception of women's efforts to advance in this field.

The First Lady said that this mindset is a major barrier to women's progress.

"It's a matter of concern that even after spending more than 50 successful years of tourism in the Maldives, there are still many challenges for women working in this sector. It's very unfortunate how society still views women working in the tourism industry, especially in resorts," the First Lady said.

The first lady stated that discrimination in employment based on gender is not acceptable in any way. She said such actions would set back efforts to establish gender equality.

Noting that the tourism sector has a relatively low proportion of women, the First Lady said that the low number of women working in resorts is due to the lack of a conducive environment.

She said that social stigma associated with working women and the limited opportunities for women in managerial positions are also factors contributing to the low number of women working in the sector.

The First Lady also spoke about the challenges faced by women in the work environment in the Maldives.

She said it is very important to create a working environment that acknowledges women's needs, such as maternity leave, and paves the way for them to move forward.

The First Lady said that if there is a desire to bring about real change in the tourism sector and develop robust policies, it is necessary to listen to women's voices. She also emphasized the importance of addressing the challenges faced by women in the work environment.

At the ceremony, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) presented her with a commemorative plaque.
