Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, has submitted a case to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), against Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Didi, for alleged misconduct.
During a press conference held at the Parliament, on Sunday, Parliament's Secretary General Fathimath Niusha, stated that newly elected speaker, the former President Nasheed, had filed a request at JSC seeking to investigate the matter.
According to local media Mihaaru, the alleged misconduct was flagged over a deposit of USD 1 million that was made in 2015 to a Malaysian bank account opened under his wife's name.
The period in which the deposit was made coincides with the 13-year jail verdict slapped onto the former President over the arbitrary detention of then-Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdulla Mohamed.
Judge Didi, at the time a judge at the Criminal Court, was part of the bench that determined Nasheed's guilty verdict.
Nasheed was appointed as a JSC member in relation to his election as Parliament Speaker, while MP Hisaan Hussain was appointed parliamentary representative to the commission.
In addition to Nasheed, following set regulations, Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and Civil Service Commission's President Dr Ali Shameem were automatically granted JSC membership.
The remaining members of JSC include Supreme Court representative Abdulla Areef, High Court representative Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, President's representative Masthoor Husny, the Parliament's citizen representative Abdul Hannan Ahmed, representing the Magistrate Courts Mohamed Easaafulhu, and elected by the licensed lawyers of Maldives, Latheefa Gasim.
