Nazim declared during today's parliament session that the Governor Hashim has not undertaken any responsibilities of his role since this government came into power, be that advising the State or advising the parliament.
Vice Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim declared today that the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Ali Hashim does not fulfil the responsibilities of his title and revealed that he has not offered any counsel to the government thus far.
Debating on the State's Fiscal Responsibility bill during today's parliament session, Nazim said that the state can only advance its efforts to address the country's distressed economic state through a strong and solid fiscal policy.
However, he highlighted that the State does not possess the power to control monetary policies to improve matters related to the economy and stressed that this is a responsibility assigned to the Governor of the Central Bank.
Nazim said that although this duty has been mandated over the Governor by law, Hashim, who currently fills the position, has not been observed to have undertaken any responsibilities of the role.
"During these six month after this government assumed office, the State has not received any form of counsel from the governor. And nor did this parliament," said Nazim.
Ali Hashim was appointed to the position of the Governor on September 8, 2019 during the administration of former president, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He had also previously served as the Finance Minister of Maldives from 2008 to 2010.
