Maldives has called to abolish the power to veto motions at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), stating that the country cannot turn a blind eye towards Israel's genocide of Palestinians.

Reading a statement on behalf of Maldives at the 78th convention of the UN's General Council, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development, Dr Ali Haidar declared that the procedure allowing the vote of a single country to negate actions taken by multiple countries against the Palestinian genocide inside the most powerful function of UN; the United Nations' Security Council (UNSC) is a shameful scene.

"A single vote cancelling the loud voices calling for justice for Palestine is a shameful thing." said Haidar.

The United States had blocked the proposal to establish Palestine as an independent Member State of the UN using their power to veto at the Security Council before it could be advanced to the General Council.

Haidar stated that the voice of peaceful protestants who had taken to the streets to advocate for the freedom of Palestine alongside the efforts of 140 Member States of the UN and 12 Member States of the UNSC for this same cause were silenced with that single vote.

"With that single vote, the UN's Security Council has failed once again. With this veto, the Security Council was disabled from stopping Israeli's attempts to erase the Palestinian ethnicity," asserted Haidar.

The Minister stated that the inhumane action committed by Israel on the Palestinian lands are being documented in history each day, written in bold. He had further highlighted that the distressing scene of children attempting to save their families from under rubbles of destroyed buildings by their very own hands are seen every single day.

"We cannot pretend under any circumstance that this is something that isn't happening," Haidar maintained.

"While I am speaking to the Security Council on Palestinian land, we cannot pretend that we don't know these crimes are being committed."

Asserting that the atrocious actions of Israel has become normal due to UN's inadequacy in taking action on the matter, the Minister reiterated that Israel has turned the veto into a weapon to occupy the Palestinian lands and continue the genocide against them.

Moreover, he had firmly called for a mandate over Israel to accept Palestine as an independent sovereign State and return the Palestinian lands occupied by them including the lands which belongs to the Palestinians forced to become refugees since 1948.

Palestine was conferred the position of UN observer in 2012. The country had lobbied their establishment as a full member of the UN for many years after their submission to claim membership in 2011 remained unaddressed without any decision or action proceeded on the proposal.
