Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Tuesday, revealed that the incidence of Dengue fever was lower in June and July compared to rates recorded in the same period of 2018.
According to statistics publicized by HPA, 3097 cases of Dengue were reported this year. HPA stated that this was lower than rates in 2018.
The greatest incidence of the disease during June and July was recorded in regions of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Dhaalu Atoll and Laamu Atoll. The number of cases recorded for these locations are 79, 37 and 33 respectively. A total of 69 people were diagnosed with Dengue in the Male' region during the period.
Despite a lower incidence of Dengue, reports of Chikungunya have increased overall in 2019. So far, a total of 1343 cases were diagnosed. HPA stated that even if Chikungunya cases recorded from January to May had increased the cases identified in June and July had decreased compared to 2018.
Excluding Male', the highest incidence of Chikungunya was reported in Raa Atoll with 319 cases and Ghaafu Alifu Atoll with 291 cases. In 2019, 455 people in the Male' region contracted the disease to date.
In addition to Chikungunya and Dengue fever, the overall incidence of viral fevers is reported to increases during the Southwest Monsoon.
