President Solih honours 9 officers over fire relief efforts

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Sunday, awarded special silver medals to nine officers of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) who risked their lives to rescue stranded victims in the fire that ravaged Henveiru ward in capital city Male'.

President Solih presented the medals at the ceremony held to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the foiled coup attempt on November 3, 1988, dubbed 'Victory Day'. The attack resulted in the death of 11 Maldivian civilians and eight military personnel.

The nine officers who received the medals are:

- Sergeant Ahmed Saeed

- Sergeant Mahfooz Abdul Rasheed

- Sergeant Ali Rizveen

- Sergeant Adam Fazeel

- Sergeant Hussain Anwar

- Corporal Ahmed Anas Zaki

- Corporal Ahmed Hisham

- Corporal Shahudhaan Naseem

- Private Ismail Ruhushan

The fire, which originated from a chemical storage facility on September 20, engulfed 14 houses, six warehouses and claimed the life of one woman. Over 400 individuals were displaced.

National Disaster Management Authority (MDNA) on November 1 disclosed that financial losses sustained in the fire amount to over MVR 35 million.

NDMA also noted that MVR 1.1 million was issued for the government to fund the cost of three months' rent for those displaced in the fire, in addition to an MVR 1.5 million for food provision.
