Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi confirmed on Thursday that the government entered into a new agreement with United Arab Emirates (UAE) to train firefighters.

The opportunity was presented to the Minister during her meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister of UAE, Saif bin Zayed. Tweeting about the exchange, Minister Mariya announced that national firefighters of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) were offered training at a prestigious university in UAE. The minister expressed her gratitude to the UAE for the offer.

There have been a number of fire incidents recently, with two major fires in Male' City. A speedboat docked at T-Jetty caught fire on September 30 not long after major fires broke out in Henveiru Ward, damaging many houses and displacing hundreds from their homes.

The current administration has fast-tracked actions to avoid similar disasters happening in the future. Following the Henveiru fire, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ordered all chemical storage facilities to be moved outside residential areas.

The Japanese government also recently gifted firefighting equipment and vehicles to the Maldives.
