Maldives Police Service, on Saturday, arrested a man from Fuvahmulah City for issuing death threats against the founder of Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN), Shahindha Ismail.

Police spokesperson revealed that a 19-year-old was apprehended over making death threats on social media, thereby encouraging violence and creating discord in society.

In addition to assuring that the matter was under investigation, the police did not reveal any further details.

According to local media outlet Mihaaru, the man named Ali Awaau was arrested for retweeting a post stating that he would not hesitate to kill. However, the man deleted his twitter account later.

MDN was suspended on October 10 regarding the ongoing Police investigation into written accounts contradicting the tenets of Islam, which were included in the NGO's 2016 report 'Preliminary Assesment of Radicalisation in Maldives'.

MDN came under fire for the report, with several members of the public demanding the NGO's closure.
