A child has been born after the first successful In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment conducted in the Maldives.
Sixteen individuals received IVF treatment in the first batch of patients at the Fertility Centre opened in Tree Top Hospital in May, 2023. It was earlier announced that ten of these individuals had undergone embryo transfer, out of which six had become pregnant.
In a press conference held at Tree Top Hospital today, COO Adil Moosa stated that the first baby conceived through these treatments had been born on last Sunday.
The mother, 36 years old, had previously tried IVF treatments abroad on four separate attempts.
Both mother and infant are in good health, the hospital said.
The second baby from successful IVF treatment was born yesterday.
Historically, individuals seeking IVF treatments often had to travel abroad, incurring substantial costs and necessitating extended stays. Treetop Hospital has addressed this by setting the IVF cost at a starting price of MVR 46,000.
The hospital earlier said that although IVF treatments are provided in batches now, in the future, the hospital aims to provide the treatment daily or at the least, weekly.
