The Olympus Cinema, the local cinema hall exclusive for Dhivehi feature film screenings, has reopened after a two-year hiatus with a new movie set to premiere.

Local production house Dark Rain Entertainment’s (DRE) "Beeveemaa" will be the first local movie to premiere in the cinema after its reopening. The movie is written and directed by screenwriter Ahmed Zareer.

“Beeveemaa” is headlined by local singer Mariyam Ashfa and National Award Winner Ismail Rasheed (Kopee Isse) in the lead, with Aminath Rashfa (Aashaa) and debutant Adam Zidhan (Naana) seen in pivotal roles. The film is produced by Mohamed Ali (Moga) and Aishath Fuad (Loki).

The film is inspired by the 2018 Tamil-language romantic drama “96” starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan.

The film's creators said they are hopeful the Maldivian audience will enjoy their movie.

DRE has already announced ticket sales for its latest release; the movie is set to officially release on February 6.

The ticket counter at Olympus will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. every day. While normal show tickets are priced at MVR 135 each, premiere night show tickets will be sold at MVR 150 each. The price on local film tickets have remained unchanged since 2013, which according to the movie’s producer Mohamed Ali was to encourage Maldivian cinema-goers to enjoy local cinema.

The cinema closed down nearly two years ago for renovations and was faced with multiple delays. Several local production houses and other industry stakeholders expressed their concerns. Many claimed that the delays resulted in losses for the Maldivian movie industry.
