Police have started providing security for important meetings of the Football Association of Maldives' Normalization Committee.
Police security officials were stationed outside the VIP Room at Galolhu National Stadium on Wednesday night when the Committee met with clubs.
Police had provided security for this meeting based on the sensitivity of the issue, Mihaaru News reported. Some groups have previously entered the dilapidated premises of FAM and attempted to create unrest.
In recent months, in first division matches, some groups outside the grounds have run on the pitch and threatened and attacked match officials, players and referees. Police have investigated a number of such cases, placing people under arrest.
Members of the committee met with Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu on Wednesday. On Thursday, they met with Sports Commissioner Mohamed Tholal. Today, the committee is scheduled to meet with administrative staff of FAM.
One of the key responsibilities of the Committee is the recovery of funds that were lost to the association under its previous leadership, allegedly through misappropriation. The committee has to work with authorities to take this issue to court.
"You know how serious this matter is. Some things came up even before. We believe this has come to the notice of Police intel as well, so they have provided security," an official said.
