Some flats in construction to be allocated for Customs employees: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that some of the flats currently being built by the government will be allocated to employees of Maldives Customs Service (Customs).

Speaking at the function held at Dharubaaruge to mark the 132nd anniversary of Customs, President Solih stated that housing is the biggest concern faced by Customs employees and that the government will work towards a solution to the issue.

"The government prioritizes the provision of basic necessities for the people. In this regard, some of the housing units currently under construction in Hulhumale' will be allocated to Customs employees to solve the housing issue," said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The government is constructing 4,000 flats in Hulhumale' Phase two. The flats were contracted to Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation, the project consisting of 32 towers and 18 floors. Applications for the flats have now been opened.

Speaking at the function, the President noted that it was important to introduce a special health insurance scheme for Customs employees as well, and arrangements are underway to make this possible. He also noted that while Customs employees are taking major risks and doing crucial work, their needs need to be amply met.

President Solih said that the government's top priority is to strengthen Customs Services and reduce crimes such as drugs and money laundering. He stated that Customs has provided exceptional services during the past four years and that the popularity of the institution has increased in the public eye.

The President said that the institution's capacity must be increased to stop major crimes committed across the borders of the Maldives. He also said that the government is giving special attention to expanding Customs services in harbors to achieve this.

Closing his speech, the President thanked the senior officials and all employees for their hard work in improving Customs Services.
