State Trading Organization (STO) is set to commence bunkering services in northern Maldives on September 20.

The first vessel designated for the bunkering service, MT Marine Angel, is currently docked at Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. The second vessel, a 3,200-tonne bunkering tanker, is expected to arrive in the Maldives on Friday, according to STO.

Originally, STO and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) planned to launch international bunkering services in Ihavandhippolhu (the northernmost atoll) this Thursday. However, this date has been postponed due to delays in the vessel’s arrival caused by adverse weather conditions.

STO has signed an agreement with Vitol, the world's largest private energy company, to establish an international bunkering project in Ihavandhippolhu.

The government has earlier said that more than 300 new ships sail daily near Ihavandhippolhu.
