Tourists arrived to the capital Malé on cruise liner for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic on Sunday.

Over 600 tourists arrived in Malé on Sunday from the Seven Seas Explorer cruise liner. Some of the visiting tourists that came on the 236 meter long vessel have gone to resorts and nearby inhabited islands.

The cruise liner arrived from India, and will depart for Thailand once its stay in Maldives is over.

The first cruise liner to come to Maldives after boarders reopened was Europa, in November of this year. However, tourists from the vessel did not visit Malé

Abdul Wadood, Operations Manager of Antrek Holding and the Maldivian agent representing Seven Seas Explorer in Maldives, said there are about 10 more cruise liners coming this month and January.

Maldives saw similar numbers of cruise liners entering the country around this time of the year prior to the pandemic.

Wadood said Maldives will see cruise liners in May of 2023 as well.

In 2019, about 50 boats arrived in the Maldives in the form of passenger lines, super yachts and mega yachts. Since then, the arrival of tourists by cruise lines has come down drastically in the last two years due to the global pandemic.
