National Integrity Commission (NIC) declared that there was no evidence backing that Maldives Police Service was negligent in the investigations conducted into missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan.
NIC made this statement on September 2, after concluding their probe into the Police investigation of Rilwan's case, confirming that the commission did not receive or uncover any evidence implying that the institution was negligent.
Rilwan's family submitted the case to NIC on October 29, 2014.
However, the draft report compiled by the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances state that there is room to question how Police responded to Rilwan's disappearance.
According to the commission's recent findings, Rilwan was murdered by a local affiliate of multi-militant extremist organisation Al-Qaeda.
Upon the commission's request, Police conducted a special operation last week to search and inspect locations and persons pertinent to the commission's investigation.
No arrests were made during the operation. However, passports of 14 individuals were withheld following the announcement of the commission's investigative report summary on September 2.
CCTV footage last places Rilwan at Hulhumale' Ferry Terminal on August 8, 2014. With recent findings, authorities now believe that the journalist was abducted near his apartment in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale', transported to a fishing vessel on a dinghy, and murdered.
