The body of the man found deceased in Maafushi Prison last Tuesday has been sent to India for a postmortem examination.

The 62 year old man, Abdul Ghanee Ismail, was accused of sexually assaulting a 15 year old girl and had been in custody pending trial since March.

Earlier, the Ministry of Homeland, Security and Technology confirmed that the man died by hanging. No further details have been provided, and it remains unclear whether there were cameras installed in his cell.

Police said today that the man's body was sent for a postmortem yesterday.

The deceased had previously been incarcerated for assaulting a woman on the street and soliciting physical relations with her. He was convicted on three counts and sentenced in 2021 to one month and 24 days in jail.

In June, the government made it mandatory to conduct autopsies on prisoners who die in prison and individuals who die while in custody on various charges.

The government implemented the requirement following allegations that Mohamed Jameel, who died last June while incarcerated in Maafushi Prison, had been beaten by prison officers.

Therefore, Ministry of Homeland, Security, and Technology said at a press conference last June that postmortems will be conducted on anyone who dies in prison.
