According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Maldives state is preparing to prosecute Ibrahim Faih Nizam, a suspect in an assault case believed to be linked to a series of gang-related incidents in Malé City in February.

Faih had gone into hiding for over a month after his involvement in an assault and surrendered to Maldives Police on March 21.

The prosecution is set to begin this week, after Nizam was presented at the Criminal Court on April 19 and ordered to extend his remand by another seven days to begin trial.

The court order stated that there was sufficient evidence, including witness testimonies, victim's statements, and video and image analysis reports, to try Faih for assault charges.

Police submitted Faih's criminal records, indicating similar priors. The court said there is the possibility tampering with evidence and putting the public at risk if he were to be released from custody.

The gang-related incidents in February also resulted in the death of one individual. Maldives Police had launched a manhunt to apprehend those involved, and several high-profile criminals were brought under police custody in their attempt to arrest Faih.
