Police have urged everyone to take caution, especially those travelling in time for and during, the Eid holidays commencing on Tuesday.
During a press conference held by Police, Head of Nothern Division, Chief Inspector of Police Abdulla Shareef stated that the authorities have begun work across the archipelago to ensure everyone's safety during the celebratory period.
The Chief Inspector said particular importance was afforded to islands in which Police are not usually stationed.
Noting that while the weather is predicted to be disagreeable, many people, especially musicians and groups of entertainers, are set to travel in this period, he urged travellers to take all the necessary precautions and to be mindful of the weather.
"Police will check vessels to see all matters are up to code. We will also check to see if the number of passengers does not exceed beyond limits."
Addressing press at Iskandhar Koshi, Shareef revealed that over the past three years, most of the cases reported (during the holidays) are theft and drug-related.
Head of Male' Police Chief Superintend of Police Moosa Ali stated that in Eid of 2016, the majority of reported crimes were robberies.
He said that during Eid, the incidence of theft increases and appealing to citizens to take appropriate preventive measures.
"To ensure the safety of those visiting Male' during the Eid holidays, special operations will be carried with increased patrolling," said Moosa.
Police advised civilians to avoid carrying large sums of cash on hand and utilize cash cards instead. They also requested guesthouses to strengthen security measures as well as urge their guests to lock up valuables before leaving the premises.
Per the statistics shared by the Police, during Eid in 2016, a total of 468 cases were reported. In the following years, the numbers declined with only 385 cases reported in 2017, while in 2018, the amount was only 361.
