An individual who robbed the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) has been sentenced to one month in jail and 800 hours of community service.
In October last year, a robber stole MVR 500 and a mobile phone from NCIT. The defendant pleaded guilty to theft and damage to property in the case and said that the crime was committed under the influence of drugs.
The defendant had requested a lighter sentence, which the prosecution had complied with.
The Criminal Court on Thursday sentenced the alleged offenders to 24 days in prison and 640 hours of community service for theft and six days in prison and 160 hours of community service for property damage.
The punishment prescribed under the Penal Code can be converted to fines and hours of community service. The Correctional Service will determine the activities that can be done in order to serve the community. These include waste collection and cleaning.
