Authorities have begun a probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of an expatriate who was working on the Thilamalé connectivity bridge.

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure yesterday confirmed the death of an Indian national who was working on the bridge construction site on Monday night. He was employed by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.

However, the cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Further, the Ministry, in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) said that the incident is now being investigated by relevant authorities with the support of the contractor.

The Thilamalé bridge is a USD 500 million dollar project being carried out under Indian Exim Bank's USD 400 million line of credit and USD 100 million extended as by the Indian government.

Currently there are hundreds of Indian workers employed on the projects awarded to Afcons in the Maldives.
