Maldives IHAA Table Tennis Academy has begun preparations to depart to Sri Lanka for a four day training camp.

This trip to Kandy, Sri Lanka, will see the participation of 18 athletes and 4 coaches from the academy run by TT Umpire (Seaweed) Ibrahim Latheef.

After departing to Kandy this Saturday, the team is set to play friendly matches with some schools at the city's table tennis center.

A total of198 players from seven schools in Kandy will participate in the training camp, said Ibrahim.

"Over the course of four days, with two sessions each day, one school will face off against IHAA players in each session," he explained.

"With these competitive matches, our players will be able to learn a lot. This is a very important camp for the athletes development."

Ibrahim Latheef comes from a family of table tennis players. The TT team his brother, Ahmed Latheef played for was the first Maldivian team to compete in an international tournament. The most renowned player in Ibrahim's family is the national champion of Maldives, Mohamed Shahfaan Ismail.

Youth athletes Zeek Hassan Latheef and his sister, Zara Hassan Latheef, are also from this family. Their father, Hassan Latheef, a former member of parliament, was once a table tennis player as well.

Ibrahim Latheef and Ahmed Latheef are active participants in today's table tennis industry as well. Both players have continued competing in tournaments for the veterans category.
