Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced on Thursday that the government is planning to build centers in three areas of Maldives so that resort employees will have places they can easily meet their families.

It is a presidential pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to ensure resort employees can meet their families more frequently than they currently can. He had pledged at the time to change the law so that resort employees can take longer breaks after saving up their off-days.

In the ceremony held to inaugurate “Fahi Fathuruverikamah Anhenun,” a program meant to increase women in Maldives’ tourism industry, Minister Saeed said it is one of President Muizzu’s pledges to decentralize central Maldives and build population centers.

He said Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Tourism, and Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure have commenced efforts to build population centers in central, northern, and southern Maldives.

“What we are trying to do is work together with the Planning Ministry [Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure] and the Ministry of Tourism to find out how the connectivity is best from the population centers we are setting up to the resorts in northern, central, and southern Maldives. And to establish special accommodations for people that work in tourism,” he said.

Noting the obstacles women in tourism industry faces, he acknowledged women that wish to start families find it difficult to work in the tourism industry. He said the government is now working to find solutions for this problem.

“The president thought of creating accommodations in specific areas and providing services through these accommodation centers to people working in the tourism industry in a smooth manner. A transport network to come along with it and the system would be easily put in place,” Minister Saeed said.

He believes that when this problem is addressed the amount of women that work in tourism will increase.
