HPA urges caution against Covid-19 and other viral diseases

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Thursday urged the public to be wary of the spread of Covid-19, and other viral flus.

According to the agency, the increase in Covid-19 cases began early last month.

So far this month, 84 people have tested positive for Covid-19, of whom 73 are from the Malé region. HPA said that 17 individuals had to be hospitalised.

The number of reported dengue cases also increased last month, the statistics released by HPA revealed. In February, there were 146 cases of dengue; by March, the number had increased to 169.

In February, 30,628 cases of the common cold were reported; the number rose to 37,969 in March.

There have also been 62 reported cases of influenza this year thus far.

HPA notified precautionary measures to be taken to prevent the spread of the viral diseases. These include:

- Covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing

- Washing hands with soap and water regularly

- Avoiding public spaces if you exhibit symptoms

- Seek medical assistance immediately if symptoms progress

- Getting vaccinated for influenza

- Using hand sanitizer frequently.

More than 185,000 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives so far, with 311 deaths as a result of the virus.
