The Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment has opened training opportunities for young female footballers.

The opportunity is facilitated through the collaboration of the US Embassy in the Maldives, the US State Department's Office of Sports Diplomacy, and FHI360, an international non-profit working to improve the health and well-being of people in the US, according to the ministry.

The overseas training program is open to female footballers aged 15 to 18 who have not previously represented a team on a national platform.

A total of five athletes will be chosen for the training program, which will take place from June to July of this year.

Interested applicants were required to submit their documents, along with a video showcasing their talents, before noon on March 21. Athletes scoring the highest marks in the video-clip assessment will be shortlisted for interviews, the ministry said.

"The aim for this is to provide training for girls who did not previously have such opportunities," the sports ministry's statement regarding the program said.

The United States is considered to have one of the strongest female football teams internationally. The US Women’s National Team has already won four Women’s World Cup trophies.
