Maldives Police Service on Wednesday said that it is investigating the large oil spill in Malé City’s main jetty area.

A media official from the police confirmed to Mihaaru that the incident was being investigated, although, he did not reveal any further details.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the police have been working together since Sunday to clear the damaging oil spill.

So far, they have filtered 15 barrels of crude oil from the area, MNDF said. Which is approximately 2,400 litres of oil.

Since the oil spill originated close to Jetty Number 1, or the official presidential jetty, there has been public speculation that it was an intentional incident.

Locals traveling to nearby islands frequently use this jetty area, located in front of the President's Office and the police headquarters, the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Monday also affirmed that the authority will investigate the matter seriously and identify the responsible party.
