Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Sunday announced that 741 tested positive for COVID-19.

HPA has been working to clear a backlog of samples collected, and as such, out of the samples that tested positive today, only 515 cases were positive from those collected within the past 24 hours.

Notably, this was the first time the number of cases dropped below 1000 in over a week.

This increased the confirmed COVID cases in the country to a total of 44,,523.

Meanwhile, 446 people made full recoveries, bringing the total figure to 28,459 to date.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 560 were from the greater Male’ region while 146 cases were from residential islands and 25 from operational resorts.

Maldives is currently in its worst COVID wave still date. The fatality rate has increased rapidly, with 21 deaths recorded in May so far. In total, 92 people have passed away.

Moreover, there are 15,958 active cases in the country, the highest figure has been since the first case was found.

To curb the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Maldives, HPA has strengthened the restrictive measures. This includes increasing curfew hours and extending the curfew duration as well.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 163 million people and claimed over 3.39 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 143 million people have recovered.
