Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan stated yesterday that Bangladeshi nationals involved in organizing a protest against the ongoing civil unrest in their country, which has resulted in authorities opening fire on civilians and multiple fatalities, will be detained and deported.
While over 170 people have been killed in Bangladesh over protests which started against the country's government job quota system, Bangladeshi nationals living in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo took to the streets to protest against their government.
Minister Ihusaan, noting that this is a violation of their work visas, said that authorities are in the process of arresting and deporting those who organized the demonstrations.
"Foreigners cannot come to the Maldives and engage in political work. It is a visa violation," the minister said.
As the Maldives moves to deport Bangladeshi protesters, a court in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has handed down long-term prison sentences to 57 Bangladeshis who protested over the same issue in the country.
In the UAE case, 53 individuals were sentenced to ten years in prison, while the remaining protesters received prison terms ranging from one to eleven years.
