T-Jetty fire victims in stable condition: IGMH

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) confirmed on Tuesday that all of the burn victims of Monday's T-Jetty fire are in stable condition.

The fire broke out aboard a speedboat docked at T-Jetty in capital Male' while the speedboat was being refuelled by a bowser.

IGMH's spokesperson Ismail Ahmed told local media Mihaaru that nine individuals injured in the fire were brought to the hospital but two were discharged on Monday after treatment.

Currently, a total of two expatriates and six locals are under treatment in the state-run hospital.

Two of the locals are admitted at the High Dependency Unit while two more locals and two expatriate workers are being treated in the hospital's surgical ward.

According to the spokesperson, one patient was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as a preventive measure in case his condition suddenly worsened.

Ismail further disclosed that he suffered burns on 50 percent of his body.

Other victims suffered burns on 20 to 35 percent of their bodies.

Ismail further noted that all the victims of the incident fell between the age group of 25 to 40.

A similar incident occurred early September when a boat docked at Male' North Harbour caught fire, resulting in various crew members suffering injuries. Six individuals were treated at IGMH regarding the incident.

One of the expatriates injured in the fire suffered burns on 80 percent of his body and was treated in the ICU.

Ismail had previously assured that all the victims of these incidents were recovering as well.
