President Dr Mohamed Muizzu left for New York, USA, last night to participate in the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he will be delivering remarks and joining a special open debate at the UN Security Council.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that maintaining close ties with the international community will greatly benefit the Maldives ahead of his visit to New York for the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly last night.
Speaking with reporters before his departure, President Muizzu highlighted the need for the Maldives to stay connected with global partners, particularly at the United Nations, given the country's current circumstances. He noted that international engagement is key to securing potential benefits and strengthening the Maldives' global presence.
"Development can be achieved in the Maldives by strengthening relations with the international community and addressing the country's needs," the President said.
He added that his visit will focus on fostering collaborations with international partners to address crucial issues.
During his visit, the President is scheduled to discuss topics of importance to the Maldives, including environmental concerns, technological advancements, and developmental initiatives. He added that he aims to seek assistance and explore potential collaborations to benefit the country.
This visit marks President Muizzu's first official trip to the United States and the United Nations. It also coincides with the 59th anniversary of the Maldives becoming a UN member state.
This is the first instance where a Maldivian president will address the UN Security Council.
During his visit, President Muizzu will also attend the "The Summit of the Future Side event: A vision for an Intelligence Driven Future for Maldives" on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The President is also scheduled to meet and address the student of Princeton University in the US.
