The Ministry said that it has decided to scrap vehicles that have remained unused and are against regulations in Malé and Hulhumalé to further ensure road safety.
A special program has been launched to remove old and unregistered vehicles in Malé and Hulhumalé.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, in a statement today, said that the rise in traffic congestion on the roads has created obstacles to ensuring road safety and security.
The Ministry said that it has decided to scrap vehicles that have remained unused and are against regulations in Malé and Hulhumalé to further ensure road safety.
According to the Ministry, the work will be conducted in collaboration by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Male' City Council, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Maldives Customs Service, Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development, Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, and the police. An Urban Traffic Decongestion Management Committee has been formed for this purpose, the Ministry said.
The Ministry has decided to conduct the program in two phases.
1. Removal of vehicle parts left unused on roads for extended periods of time
2. Open the opportunity for those who wish to voluntarily request scrapping their vehicle
3. Towing vehicles left idle for an extended period
4. Removing unregistered vehicles from the roads
