The mother of the abandoned newborn discovered in a waste disposal area on Alif Dhaalu atoll Dhigurah has been detained until the end of the trial.
A 30-year-old Sri Lankan woman, employed at a guest house in Dhigurah, has been arrested on charges of killing and dumping the newborn.
Police reported that the mother was produced before the Criminal Court for a decision on her remand. She is charged with intentional homicide, according to the police.
The body of the newborn was found in a black garbage bag in the waste disposal area of the island.
A police team was dispatched to the island yesterday to investigate the case.
The mother of the newborn was arrested yesterday while attempting to flee and was detained at Velana International Airport.
According to the Dhigurah island council, the baby was discovered around 8 am when an employee at the island's waste disposal facility was at work. They further stated that the newborn was found while employees were attempting to discard garbage at the waste disposal site.
