Seven Indians and two Bangladeshis died in the garage blaze: Police

Police has confirmed on Friday that seven Indians and two Bangladeshis had died in the fire incident during the early hours of Thursday, in Sendrose house.

However, they said they have not been able to identify an additional person that had died in this incident.

Previously, it was believed nine Indians and one Bangladeshi had died.

According to the police, three Indian women and four Indian men had passed away, while a Bangladeshi man and a woman had passed away.

The bodies were burnt so badly it has been difficult to identify them, they said.

All ten bodies are now in the Galolhu Mortuary in Male'.

Another burnt victim from this incident, had been receiving treatment in Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) as well. The victim has been confirmed to be male, which was previously undetermined due to the severity of the burns. His identity remains unconfirmed.

A media official from the hospital had confirmed to Mihaaru news that the man was still in the ICU and that he is in critical condition.

Full investigation underway: Foreign Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives said on Friday that they were closely monitoring the fire incident, and that they were conducting a full investigation of this incident.

This is the biggest fire incident till date in Male', and believed to have started from a vehicle garage operated in the ground floor of the western area of the building. The house is used as an accommodation block by foreign workers in Male', and workers from Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh work there.
