State-run Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) asserted on Monday that their drivers operate in a good work environment but training programmes will be held to improve their performance.
According to MTCC's CEO Hassan Shah, drivers have to be on the road for only four hours from their eight-hour duty.
"They are on standby for the next four hours," he added.
"...but we always carry out training programmes to increase their skill level. Just this year we carried out a training programme in collaboration with Police. More training programmes will be held in the future".
He made this assurance while responding to a question posed by local media Mihaaru following the accident that took place on Monday morning where a female Ukrainian tourist was run over by an MTCC bus driver that had fallen asleep at the wheel.
Although there were passengers in the bus at the time of the accident in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' near a Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) petrol shed, none of them sustained any injuries.
The Maldivian driver is currently under arrest over the matter.
The accident was reported to Maldives Police Services on Monday morning at 0637 hrs.
