President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has decided to mitigate the sentences of some convicts.

Spokesperson of the President's Office, Ibrahim Muaz, tweeted Thursday stating that the president has decided to grant clemency on the occasion of Maldives' Independence Day, which is celebrated on July 26.

According to a statement released by the President's Office, clemency will not be granted for those convicted of homicide, terrorism, drug trafficking, rape, homosexuality and sexual abuse of minors.

Clemency will be granted only for convicts that meet the conditions specified in Article 29 of the Clemency Act.

The president has selected a special committee and tasked them to meet and interview the selected convicts and their families. Their sentences were mitigated after putting forth certain conditions. If the convicts or violate any of the conditions, the mitigation will be cancelled.

The statement also noted that those who have been fined will not be given mitigation under this.
