Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has said that action will be taken against foreigners who operate taxis against regulations.

Of late, there have been multiple reports of foreigners operating taxis in cars not associated with any registered taxi service providers. Members of the public have been voicing concerns about the issue, as well.

In a statement released today, the Transport Ministry reiterated that action will be taken against foreigners who operate taxis in this manner, which is against regulations.

As per the Taxi Regulations, a foreign driver is eligible for a taxi license if they hold a Resident Visa and are married to a Maldivian.

Action that can be taken against taxi operators working against the regulations include a fine of MVR 500 for providing taxi service without a permit, or a fine of MVR 750 for providing a private hire without a permit.

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, MACL and Police are conducting a collaborative effort currently to solve the issues faced by customers seeking taxi services. Police are also actively working to solve this issue, out on street patrols. Special attention is being given to address the many concerns raised regarding the taxi queues at the Velana International Airport.
