Number of accidents surge, 1,907 reported so far this year

This marks an increase of 431 accidents compared to the same period last year, when 1,476 accidents were recorded by August, 2023.

There have been 1,907 traffic accidents reported in the Maldives so far this year, according to police data.

This marks an increase of 431 accidents compared to the same period last year, when 1,476 accidents were recorded by August, 2023.

The highest number of accidents occurred in the Male' area, resulting in 125 injuries and five deaths.

The highest number of accidents this year occurred in March, with 301 incidents reported. Other months have averaged over 200 accidents. The majority of these accidents happened in Male', Hulhumale', and on the Sinamale' Bridge.

Recent serious accidents include the death of 23 year old motorcyclist Hassan Samah, who sustained fatal head injuries in a collision with a speeding sports car. On July 31, a sports car crashed into a stationary motorist in Hulhumale' Phase 2, causing severe injuries, while another collision between a motorcycle and car occurred early this morning, with the motorcyclist also injured.

In response to the rising number of accidents and public concerns, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has directed relevant authorities to take immediate action following Friday's fatal crash.
