INNF Construction fined MVR 500K over expat death

Male' City Council announced that INNF Construction was fined MVR 500,000, over the death of a 44-year-old Bangladesh expatriate caused by a falling brick from a construction site in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale'.

The Council has allocated a time period of one month for the company to pay the fine. Further measures will be taken against the company by relevant authorities.

Council member Hussain Shareef attributed the incident to negligence of safety protocols during the construction phase.

In reference to the report compiled by the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure over the accident, Hussain revealed that the man suffered the fatal accident on February 18, while he worked between two buildings.

According to state-insurance company Aasandha, the man passed away prior to being transported to the Hulhumale' Hospital.

Recently, incidents of individuals suffering injuries due to falling, or being struck by falling objects from construction sites have increased. A 9-year-old Bangladeshi girl succumbed to her injuries last December after being hit by a cement bag that fell from a construction site contracted to W Construction Pvt Ltd in capital Male'.

Fines levied on construction sites since Jian's death;

W Construction - MVR 500,000

ABC Construction - MVR 250,000

Nasa Link Construction - MVR 100,000

Infinity Builders - MVR 15,000

Two other construction companies were fined MVR 5,000 each for failing to follow safety protocols.
