The Civil Court on Tuesday issued deadlines for the state to enact some of the pending regulations under the Construction Act.

There are 14 regulations still unimplemented as per the Act which came into effect last year. The court issued the order after looking into a Public Interest Litigation, which was filed jointly by several lawyers after the death of a young girl who was struck by a falling cement bag at a construction site in December 2018.

The Civil Court ordered the state to enact 13 of the pending regulations, including the Building Code and regulations on safety protocols. The deadline for the safety protocols is the end of January, while the court extended deadlines throughout March for the rest.

The Public Interest Litigation case was filed by law firms Riza, Shafneez & Co and Wisham & Co. LLP, along with lawyers Aryj Hussain, Fathimath Shareef and Sofiyya Thaufeeq.

Following the tragic death, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and Male' City Council had inspected safety practices at construction sites throughout the capital city.
