The parliament rejected the emergency motion submitted by Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir, proposing to take swift action regarding dangerous accidents that occur on construction sites.
A majority of 52 members voted against conducting a debate on the issue while only six parliamentarians voted in favor of the motion.
The emergency motion stated that while several highrise buildings were being built in the capital city of Male', negligence on the part of construction companies concerning safety regulations on sites had resulted in serious consequences.
Jabir's motion posed responsibility on several government authorities to provide a solution for the issue, stating that it posed great risks to persons living in the capital as well as those visiting.
The motion called on the government to solve the problem as swiftly as possible.
At present, due to the prevalence of accidents causing injuries to construction workers and civilians alike, the government is reportedly in the process of finding working solutions, including a move to compile construction regulations to ensure safety.
Recently in July, an expatriate worker died in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale' after being struck by a jumbo bag holding several sacks of cement while in well-known case, a young girl passed away in Male' after she was struck by a cement bag that fell from a construction site in December 2018.
In relation to the aforementioned cases, certain companies were fined for negligence and workers were charged as being responsible.
