Anti Corruption Commission has decided to conduct a research into why individuals are driven to committing acts of corruptions.

A statement released by the Commission said that the purpose of conducting such a research is to explore the details of how and why acts of corruption are committed in the Maldives, and to identify preventive action that can be taken against it.

The research will cover the motivations behind acts of corruption, the abuse of State positions and powers, the way the involvement of other employees in an individual's acts of corruption is garnered, changes to their standard of living, criminal mindset and other factors, the ACC said.

ACC has previously conducted a research on public awareness and perception of corruption.

The Commission said that results of both the researches will be consolidated to form a cohesive technical framework within which anti-corruption work in the Maldives can be carried out.

"Through the findings of this research, we will be able to formulate plans on what we need to focus on in schools to promote integrity, to instill the values of integrity in children, to create an environment where acts of corruption are not tolerated in the workplace, and to draft laws, regulations and policies that will aid in the implementation of this," their statement reads.

This is the first research of its kind that is being conducted in the Maldives.
