Civil Court ordered W Construction to pay MVR 4.5 million in compensation to the family of seven year old Rawshan Jian's death.

Rawshan Jian, a Bangladeshi national was struck by a falling cement bag from the construction site in December 2018 and passed away while receiving treatment for the injuries she sustained in the accident in IGMH.

Her parents had filed for MVR 17.4 million in compensation in 2019. Her family was legally represented by Public Interest Law Center (PILC).

In a statement by PILC on Tuesday evening, civil court had ruled that employees of W Construction had been negligent. The court ruled the company had to pay MVR 4.5 million in financial compensation under vicarious liability.

This money has to be paid within a period of two months.

PILC had pressed charges against six people over this case in 2019. They are Managing Director of W Construction Adam Shafeeq, Supervisor at W Construction Moosa Hassan, and four workers from India. Criminal Court ruled that except for Shafeeq, the remaining five individuals were complicit in negligence. Only two of the foreign workers received a jail sentence.

Moosa was fined Rf. 115,200 while the other two foreign workers received a fine of MVR 7,200 each.
